Fumitake Niibo Born May 22, 2001 — Kagoshima, Japan 新穂 文健 2001年5月22日生まれ 鹿児島県出身 ⸻ ▷ Artist Statement “My works stem from the realization that nothing in life is guaranteed. Surviving two brain tumors and living with lasting health challenges has shaped my perspective. Through the medium of ink — characters merging with living forms — I aim to visualize life’s fragility and resilience. Each piece is both a record of my survival and a testament to beauty found in impermanence.” I refine my text repeatedly until a clear image emerges, and only then do I move on to sketching. By the time the writing is complete, the overall form of the work is almost fully formed in my mind. My works embody what I call “the power of life.” The material I use, sumi ink, is particularly well suited to expressing this life force. Solid ink sticks can retain their form for centuries, yet the moment they come into contact with water, deterioration begins. However, once the ink is placed onto washi paper, time seems to slow again, and the ink continues to live on, changing its texture and character over time. I draw water from Maruike Pond in Yusui Town, Kagoshima Prefecture—selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Exquisite Waters—and use it to grind my ink. To produce just 30 mL of ink, I grind natural solid ink continuously for about four hours. The finished ink has a thick, clay-like consistency. In traditional ink painting, artists typically prepare several inks of different densities in advance. In contrast, I load a highly viscous ink onto the brush and adjust its density directly within the brush by dipping it into a container of water. As a result, every line differs in concentration, and even when using the same ink, multiple tones of black emerge across the surface. For each work, I select approximately three brushes at the outset. Although the drawings include delicate details such as eyes or limbs, I do not use pencils or extremely fine brushes. Instead, I split the tip of a standard-sized brush with my fingers, allowing two or three strands of hair to extend and create fine lines. I work with washi paper mounted vertically on a wall, which allows the ink to drip naturally. Through experience, I have developed the ability to control viscosity and flow, determining how far the ink will drip so that it enhances depth without disrupting negative space. While the dripping is intentional, the points at which the ink begins and bleeds are born from unconscious movement —this balance between control and chance is what makes the dripping technique compelling. Sumi ink is made from soot and animal glue. By altering the ratio of these materials, areas where ink overlaps can appear lighter, allowing white to emerge from black. Once the image has fully taken form, the completed work is finished with custom mounting, either as a hanging scroll or in a frame. ⸻ ◆ Exhibitions and Achievements 2020 Solo Exhibition「SUMI」 (Fukuoka, Japan) 2021 TOKYO ANTIQUE FAIR (Tokyo, Japan) 2021 Solo Exhibition「Ikiru Michi“The Way of Living”- Final Solo Exhibition of My Teens -」(Fukuoka, Japan) 2021 Label design for “Akune no Hikari”- Kagoshima Shuzo Co., Ltd. 2021 Logo and visual identity for Japanese restaurant “Matsuki” 2022 TOKYO ANTIQUE FAIR (Tokyo, Japan) 2022 Front-page feature in a vertical layout - the first of its kind since the founding of Minami-Nippon Shimbun 2023 TOKYO ANTIQUE FAIR (Tokyo, Japan) 2023 Main visual for「Kagoshima National Sports Festival (Boxing)」 2023 Main visual for the 34th National High School Boxing Selection Tournament 2023 Main visual for the JOC Junior Olympic Cup 2023 Main visual for JA (Japan Agricultural Cooperatives) Izumi 30th Anniversary Agricultural Festival 2024 Label design for Junmai Daiginjo sake「Tsutsumotase」- Takahashi Shoten Co., Ltd. Through my own experiences, I became keenly aware of life itself, and I have come to feel that walking the path of calligraphy is not a coincidence, but a calling—perhaps my destiny. I have rarely spoken about myself, believing that personal stories might become noise when encountering a work of art. However, five years have passed since I began my artistic activities, and my perspective has expanded. I now believe that the way an artist lives is also part of the work. I did not intentionally keep this hidden, yet many people—including collectors of my works and close friends—may not know this part of my story. At the age of eight, I developed a tumor in the medulla oblongata, which left me unable to move my arms and legs properly and made walking difficult. After extensive rehabilitation, I recovered enough to return to elementary school, where I encountered calligraphy. At twelve, the tumor recurred in my pituitary gland, accompanied by hypopituitarism. Since then, I have required lifelong self-injections, making it impossible for me to forget the reality of “living.” I continued practicing calligraphy until the age of fifteen, began studying shodō at sixteen, established my current style at eighteen, and held my first solo exhibition at nineteen. Although this path may appear smooth, my life has been marked by intense and turbulent waves. I believe that true art is a device that heightens sensitivity. By creating and sharing such devices, I believe the world can shift toward a better dimension. This is my calling. When one walks the path they are meant to follow, miracles begin to occur naturally in everyday life. I create works that give vitality even to plants that speak no words. ▷ What I Wish to Convey - 伝えたいこと - 私の座右の銘は「生きる力」です。 ⸻ Niibo’s works are infused with this vitality — expressions of life itself captured in living ink.
